Re: Heterogeneous System Copy

Thanks Maria, and Nicholas,
I had expected responses from you only as I have been scouring SCN ASE section for a while now.

I had gone through most stuff except the fact that BW has to be migrated on to a higher version of ASE.

I was thinking it would be prudent to try and do a mock system copy on any one of the environments before beginning on actual systems? wouldn't you folks agree

Thanks a ton for the responses

I will trouble you both as and when I encounter any errors

Regards,

APS

Hi,
Just to clarify: the document Anne published is the same as the one attached on the SAP 1680803

About the Oracle to SAP ASE link I would discard it for this SAP application context.

Best regards,
Victoria.

Hi APS,
You're welcome !
If you have a chance to do a mock system copy yes that would be better so you can already familiarize with the migration process with ASE.

Victoria.

Quiesce database and Dump Databse

$

Hi All,

I am little confused when to use which command for backup.

Can I use Quiesec database instead of Dump database all the time?

Or Should I use Quiesec database only at particular point in time.

What is the exact difference? Once I did a DB restore from Production to Quality where Quality was at 15.7 SP121 and Production was 15.7 SP50.

To do this I have used "DUMP DATABASE SID TO E:\BACKUPS\SIDBAK.DMP". I have restored to file to quality with LOAD DATABASE command.

Everything went fine but the version of quality remained same in SP121. I do have some idea as I have only loaded SAP data to Quality.

But My concern is to restore entire database what exactly has to be used? To make exact copy as production.

Please help me to understand this.

Best Regards,

Amarnath

Hi Stephen,

We are also facing a similar issue in the same phase. ASE is not able to start the server.

How did you solve the problem. We checked the above not but we are not getting any memory related issue.

Please suggest.

Thanks

Puneet

Hi Aps,

As per your idea, and Victoria's suggestion that is a good idea the test copy

But maybe copy a qa system I would assume it would be using a lot less space than a productive system.

Kind Regards,

Johan

We could solve the problem.

However, we didn't exactly figure out what was the issue.

We think that more problems did occur together.

So I am sorry, I can't tell you the real solution for the problem.

Kind regards

Error while restore Database of QAS(Quality) to SND(Test Server) through TSM

Hi,

We are performing restore database of QAS(Quality System) to SND (SandBox - Test System) through TSM( Tivoli Management System) and when we try to load the database using TSM , we are getting an error.

Error Output.JPG

I have attached the SND_BS.txt log file from the target system (SND) and the steps that are done in the target database. I'm not sure where is the problem.

Can you please help me there?

I'm able to load the database with the backup taken in the target database without issues. I feel it could be something related to change in the SID's.

Hi Johan/Gaurav,

I am clear about the part of consistency by using "quiesce database". But If I need to restore the version as well ex: My production is at SP50 and test box is at SP121. How do I load the database to rewrite the version as well?

Best Regards,

Amarnath

Hi Amarnath,

Once you restore the database from Production (15.7 SP50) to Test server (15.7 SP121) , Database will be upgraded to version SP121 as well.

In ASE, You cannot maintain a user database at different version than the Server version.

Hope this is clear.

Hi Manhendr,
The error comes from OS (I would suspect it is Windows by the Error 122) to the TSM API, anything else reported on Windows Event ?
Can you confirm that the exactly same object name was used for the dump too ? I'm talking about the "QAS-2015-11-27T12-42-51" . The object name should appears on QAS_BS.log where the dump has been done.

Victoria.

Mahendr,

You are getting the below error :

Dec 01 08:57:58 2015: Backup Server: 4.141.2.24: [109] The 'api_read' call failed for database/archive device while working on stripe device 'syb_tsm::-SQAS -DQAS::QAS-2015-11-27T12-42-51::000' with error number 122 (The data area passed to a system call is too small). Refer to your operating system documentation for further details.

can you please check in the OS event logs for any messages during the same time ?

That will be helpful.
